Moxifloxacin Eye Drops (Vigamox) - Uses, Dose, Side effects

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops (Vigamox) is a sterile solution of the drug that is used to treat susceptible bacterial infections of the eye.

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops Uses:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis:

    • It is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by the following susceptible organisms:
      • Chlamydia trachomatis

  • Off Label Use of Moxifloxacin Eye Drops in Adults:

    • For prophylaxis in surgical procedures.

Moxifloxacin dose in Adults:

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops Dose in the treatment of Bacterial conjunctivitis:

  • Vigamox:

    • For a total of seven days, apply a single drop in the affected eye, three times per day.
  • Moxeza:
    • For a total of seven days, apply a single drop in the affected eye, two times per day.

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops Dose in Surgical prophylaxis Surgical (off-label):

  • 60 minutes prior to the initiation of the procedure, apply a single drop in the operative eye in a total of 5 doses with an interval of 5 to 15 minutes.

Note:

  • Clear recommendations regarding the prophylactic use of antibiotics have not been made.
  • Prophylactic administration may be given before, during, or after the surgical procedure.

Moxifloxacin Dose in Children:

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops Dose in the treatment of Bacterial conjunctivitis:

  • Moxeza:

    • Infants aged 4 months or above, Children, and Adolescents:

      • For a total of seven days, apply a single drop in the affected eye, two times per day.
  • Vigamox: Infants, Children, and Adolescents:

    • For a total of seven days, apply a single drop in the affected eye, three times per day.

Pregnancy Risk Factor C

  • Moxifloxacin intravenous and oral can be absorbed through the placental barrier. However, it is not absorbed very well by the eye.
  • The ophthalmic solution is safe to use during pregnancy. To further reduce drug exposure, the minimum effective dose should be followed by punctal obstruction for 3 to 5 minutes.

Moxifloxacin use during breastfeeding:

  • It is unknown if the drug will be excreted into breastmilk.
  • The manufacturer suggests that you use the drug with caution while breastfeeding.

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops Dose in Kidney Disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustment in the dose. However, systemic absorption is minimal and kidney impairment does not affect the pharmacokinetics of the drug.

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustment in the dose. However, systemic absorption is minimal and liver impairment does not affect the pharmacokinetics of the drug.

    • Xerophthalmia
    • Eye pain
    • Eye irritation
    • Ocular hyperemia
    • Subconjunctival hemorrhage
    • Conjunctivitis
    • Eye pruritus
    • Lacrimation

Contraindications to Moxifloxacin Eye Drops:

MoxezaOphthalmic solution

  • There are no contraindications for its use, according to the manufacturer.

Vigamox:

  • Moxifloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any ingredient in this formulation-related allergies.

Warnings and precautions

  • Hypersensitivity reactions

    • Angioedema, skin reactions, and anaphylaxis may all occur as severe allergic reactions to the drug.
    • If an allergic reaction is suspected, treatment must be stopped immediately.
  • Superinfection

    • Antibiotics can be used for a long time and may lead to the development of resistant bacteria or fungi.
    • Superinfection must be suspected and treated immediately.

Monitor the response to therapy. 


How to administer Moxifloxacin Eye Drops?

Only ophthalmic usage is intended for eye drops. It shouldn't be given intravenously or orally. The applicator tip shouldn't touch the eye or any other surfaces when dispensing the drops.


Mechanism of action of Moxifloxacin (Eye Drops):

  • Moxifloxacin, a bactericidal medication that inhibits DNA Gyrase II (topoisomerase III) and Topoisomerase IV is called Topoisomerase IV. 
  • Topoisomerase II (DNA Gyrase), which maintains the superhelical DNA structure, is an essential bacterial enzyme. 
  • It is essential for DNA replication, transcription, and repair as well as transposition.

Absorption:

  • Ophthalmic administration has a minimal systemic absorption rate (0.02% compared to the oral formulation).
