Benzydamine for Mucositis and Acute Pharyngitis

Benzydamine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with additional local anesthetic and analgesic properties. It's commonly used as a topical treatment for inflammation and pain relief, particularly in conditions like sore throat, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and gingivitis.

It's available in various forms such as mouthwash, throat sprays, and lozenges for local application. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, which contributes to its anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, its local anesthetic properties help to relieve pain and discomfort.

  • For the symptomatic relief of oropharyngeal mucositis due to radiation therapy
  • For the relief of pain associated with a sore throat and acute pharyngitis.

Benzydamine Dose in Adults

Benzydamine Dose in the treatment of Mucositis:  

Form: Oral rinse solution.

Dosage:

  • Take 15 mL of undiluted solution.
  • Gargle or rinse with the solution 3 or 4 times daily.
  • Ensure the solution makes contact with inflamed mucosa for at least 30 seconds.
  • Spit out the solution after rinsing.

Timing:

  • Start using the rinse the day before radiation therapy.
  • Continue during radiation therapy.
  • Keep using it after radiation therapy until there's satisfactory improvement.

Benzydamine Dose in the treatment of acute Pharyngitis:  

Form: Oral rinse solution.

Dosage:

  • Gargle with 15 mL of undiluted solution.
  • Repeat every 1 to 3 hours until symptoms improve.
  • Spit out the solution after gargling; do not swallow.

Frequency: Use as often as every 1 to 3 hours until symptoms resolve.

Instructions: Ensure the solution is expelled from the mouth after each use.

Pregnancy Risk Factor: C

  • In studies with animals, negative effects were noticed during pregnancy.

Benzydamine Dose in Renal Disease:

  • The manufacturer's instructions don't mention any specific changes to the dosage.
  • However, it's advised to be cautious because some absorption of the medication might happen, and the body eliminates it through the kidneys.

Benzydamine Dose in Liver Disease:

  • The manufacturer hasn't suggested any changes to the dosage for patients with liver disease.

Contraindication to Benzydamine include:

Warnings and Precautions

Burning and irritation:

  • Some people might feel irritation or a burning sensation, especially if their mucous membranes are already damaged.
  • Mixing the solution with lukewarm water (in a 1:1 ratio) can help reduce this effect.

Renal impairment

  • Be careful when using benzydamine in patients with kidney problems, as it might be absorbed through the oral mucosa.

How to administer Benzydamine?

Oral Rinse:

  • Swallowing Precaution: Make sure not to swallow the liquid.
  • Irritation Management: If you feel any local irritation or burning, mix the solution with an equal amount of lukewarm water.

Mucositis Treatment:

  • Rinsing Technique: Rinse your mouth for 30 seconds to ensure the solution reaches and stays in contact with the inflamed mucous membranes before spitting it out.
  • Timing: Start using the rinse one day before starting radiation therapy. Keep using it every day during radiation therapy and even after completing the therapy until your mouth heals satisfactorily.

Pharyngitis Treatment:

  • Gargling Method: Gargle with the solution and then spit it out.
