Calamine lotion is used primarily as an astringent, protectant, and soothing agent for skin conditions such as poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, sunburn, or minor skin irritations.

Calamine lotion Dose in Adults

Use as Skin protectant:

  • Apply topically to the affected area as needed.

Calamine lotion Dose in Children

Calamine lotion for Skin irritation:

  • Calamine & zinc oxide products:
    • Infants older than 6 months, Children, and Adolescents:
      • Apply topically to the affected area as needed.
      • It may be used thrice or four times a day.
  • Calamine & pramoxine products:
    • Children older than 2 y/o and Adolescents:
      • Apply topically up to three or four times per day to the afflicted region.

Dose in Pregnancy & lactation

  • It is safe for use in pregnancy and lactation.
  • Application over the nipples, wounds, ulcers and exposed parts of the body should be avoided.

Calamine lotion Dose in Renal Disease:

For people with renal problems, there is no need to alter the dosage..

Calamine lotion Dose in Liver Disease:

No dose adjustment is required in patients with liver disease.

Side Effects of Calamine lotion

Side effects include skin irritation, hives, itching, rash, and redness of the skin.

Contraindication to Calamine lotion include:

  • Allergy to calamine and any component of the formulation

Warnings and Precautions

  • OTC Medicine: Self-medication and OTC medication
    • Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
    • A healthcare provider should be consulted if the condition persists after seven days.

Monitoring Parameters:

Monitoring is not required, however, patients with allergic skin conditions and insect bites should be monitored for clinical features of anaphylaxis.

How to use Calamine lotion?

  • Shake the solution well prior to its use.
  • Apply to a clean and dry skin
  • Contact with the eyes and mucous membranes should be avoided
  • It should not be applied to open wounds or burns.
  • It may be used with other antiallergic medicines like antihistamines.
