Framycetin (Soframycin) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is available as an ophthalmic formulation. It is intended for the treatment of eye infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Framycetin (Soframycin)  Uses:

  • Ophthalmic infection/ conditions:

    • It is indicated for the treatment of eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria such as S. aureus, Proteus spp., P. aeruginosa, and coliforms.
    • It is also indicated for the treatment of corneal ulcers, abrasions, and burns.
    • It may also be used as prophylaxis following removal of foreign bodies.

Framycetin (Soframycin) Dose in Adults

Framycetin (Soframycin) Dose in the treatment of Ophthalmic infections/conditions:

  • Ophthalmic:
    • Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye 3 to 4 times a day.
    • For rapid relief in patients with acute conditions, 1 - 2 drops may be instilled every 1 - 2 hours for 2 - 3 days.

Use in Children:

Not indicated.

Pregnancy Risk Category: D

  • The use of aminoglycosides in pregnancy can have serious adverse effects on the fetus. 
  • Use of aminoglycosides during pregnancy has been linked to congenital hearing loss and other adverse outcomes related to the kidneys.

Use during breastfeeding:

  • Aminoglycosides can be poorly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. 
  • It can alter the bacterial flora, so breastfeeding women should be cautious.

Contraindications to Framycetin (Soframycin):

  • Allergy to the drug, any other aminoglycoside antibiotics or any component of this formulation
  • The possibility of cross-sensitivity may exist with other Streptomyces-derived antibiotics such as neomycin, paromomycin, and kanamycin.

Warnings and precautions

  • Superinfection

    • Long-term use of the drug could lead to bacterial superinfections or fungal infections.

The therapeutic effects of Lactobacillus and Estriol may be reduced by antibiotics.

How to administer Framycetin (Soframycin)?

Ophthalmic:

  • Before administering the drug, wash hands.
  • It is intended for topical ophthalmic use only.
  • Do not touch the applicator's tip to eyes or other surfaces.

Mechanism of action of Framycetin (Soframycin):

  • It is an antibiotic with broad spectrum of action belonging to the class of aminoglycosides. 
  • It is bactericidal, and inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria through binding ribosomal reunits.
  • It is active against both aerobic gram negative and aerobic gram positive bacteria.
