Isoxsuprine (Vasodilan) is a vasodilator drug that acts via beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the uterine smooth muscles and directly acts on the vascular smooth muscles causing vasodilation.

Isoxsuprine (Vasodilan) Uses:

  • It is indicated for the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases such as thrombangiits obliterans (Buerger's disease), Raynauds Disease, and arteriosclerosis obliterans
  • It is also used to treat the symptoms of cerebrovascular insufficiency.

Isoxsuprine (Vasodilan) Dose in Adults:

Isoxsuprine (Vasodilan) Dose in the treatment of Peripheral vascular disease or symptoms of cerebrovascular insufficiency:

  • Oral: 10 to 20 mg three or four times a day.

Use in children:

Not indicated.


Isoxsuprine (Vasodilan) Pregnancy Risk Category: C

  • The drug can pass the placental barrier.
  • Mothers who are currently receiving treatment for their infants may experience adverse events such as hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia and hypotension. Infants may require urgent treatment.
  • Beta-stimulants may cause pulmonary edema in the mother. It has been associated with tachycardia in both the fetal as well as the maternal sexes.
  • Preterm labor has not been treated with this drug. Its effects on the uterine smooth muscle have been studied.

Isoxsuprine use during breastfeeding:

  • It is unknown if the drug will be excreted into breastmilk.

Dose in Kidney Disease:

    • It is possible to get a severe, drug-induced rash from its use.
    • It is imperative to stop all treatment immediately.

It may be administered with or without meals.
