Lactase (Lactaid) - Uses, Dose, MOA, Brands, Side effects

Lactase (Lactaid) is a disaccharidase enzyme that converts lactose into glucose and galactose. It helps in the digestion of dairy products in patients who are lactose intolerant.

Lactase Uses:

  • Lactose intolerance:

    • It is indicated in patients with lactose intolerance. It helps in the digestion of lactose that is the major component of milk.

Lactase Dose in Adults:

The dosage strength and frequency of administration vary according to the product. Specific product information should be consulted before prescribing the medicine.

Note:

  • Patients who take milk or dairy products 30 to 45 minutes after taking the medicine may be advised additional servings.

Lactase Dose in the Lactose intolerance:

  • Oral: It is administered orally 1 to 3 tablets with the first bite of milk or food containing dairy.

Use in children:

Refer to adults dosing.

Side effects of Lactase:

Contraindications to Lactase:

  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Patients suffering from bacterial overgrowth
  • People who have had a recent gastrointestinal surgery.

Stool frequency and improvement in abdominal gases, flatulence, and diarrheal episodes should be monitored.


How to administer Lactase?

  • It is best administered immediately before a meal that contain dairy products.
  • It may also be mixed with milk or other dairy containing liquid meals immediately before administering it.
