Podofilox Topical (Condylox Gel, Solution) - Uses, Dose, Side effects

Topical Podofilox is available as gel and solution formulations. It is used topically to treat genital and perianal warts.

Podofilox Topical Uses:

  • Genital warts:
    • Treatment of external genital warts
  • Perianal warts:
    • Treatment of perianal warts (gel only)
  • Off Label Use of Podofilox in Adults:
    • Molluscum contagiosum

Podofilox Topical  Dose in Adults

Podofilox Topical Dose in the treatment of Genital warts:

  • Topical: Solution:
    • Apply two times a day (morning and evening) for 3 days consecutively, then withhold treatment for 4 consecutive days.
    • This cycle of treatment and treatment-interruption may be repeated up to four times until the healing of the lesions and no visible wart tissue is seen.
    • The maximum dose is 0.5 ml daily (or less than 10 cm of wart tissue).
  • Note:
    • The treatment may be discontinued after four treatment cycles if the response is incomplete. Alternative therapies may be tried in such cases.

Podofilox Topical Dose in the treatment of genital and perianal warts:

  • Topical: Gel:

    • This cycle of treatment and treatment-interruption may be repeated up to four times until the healing of the lesions.

Podofilox Topical use in Children:

The safety and efficacy of the drug have not been established in children.   

Pregnancy risk category: C

  • Avoid using it during pregnancy [Ref].

Podofilox use during breastfeeding:

  • It is unknown if the drug has been in breastmilk.
  • It is unlikely that the infant will be exposed to it, as it is not absorbed systemically.

Dose in renal disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustment in the dose, however, since it is not absorbed systemically, adjustment in the dose is not necessary in patients with kidney disease.   

Dose in liver disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustment in the dose, however, since it is not absorbed systemically, Adjustment in the dose is not necessary in patients with liver disease.

Contraindications to Podofilox Topical:

Allergies to the drug, or intolerance to any ingredient of the formulation

Warnings and precautions

  • Reactions to skin:
    • It is possible for skin reactions to occur.
    • Most skin reactions are mild or moderate in intensity.

Monitoring parameters:

  • Monitor the response to treatment (for adequate healing) and tolerability of the patient.

How to Use Topical Podofilox?

  • It is intended for topical use only. It should not be applied to warts present on mucous membranes.
  • Wash hands before and after applying the drug.
  • Apply the drug using a finger (gel formulation only) or the applicator supplied with the drug (gel and solution).
  • Minimize exposure to the surrounding structures and normal tissue.
  • After applying the drug, dispose-off the applicator tip carefully.
  • Allow the solution or gel to dry in air.
  • Wash hands after applying the drug.

Mechanism of action of Podofilox Topical :

Although the precise mechanism of the drug's effect is uncertain, it results in the necrosis of the visible wart tissue.

  • When applied topically, it is not absorbable.
