Emollients (Dermaphor) - Uses, Side effects, How to apply?

Emollients such as petrolatum and dermaphor are used to lubricate and moisturize the skin. It is used to prevent the skin from minor abrasions and enhance its healing. Common emoliients available include: Petrolatum, lanolin, mineral oil and dimethicone. Some moisturizers also contain urea (for topical use).

Emollients Uses:

Emollients are used to moisten dry and itchy skin. It is used to lubricate and moisturize the skin.
Moisten skin in turn aids in the healing of superficial wounds and minor abrasions. It also protects the skin, relieves itching, burning, and pain associated with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and radiation dermatitis.
It is also used over skin area to aid in skin grafting and graft site management.

Use in Adults:

It is applied topically over the affected are twice or thrice daily.

Use in Children:

Refer to adult dosing.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:

It can be used safely over the skin during pregnancy and lactation.

Dose in Renal disease:

No dosage adjustment needed.

Dose in Liver disease:

No dosage adjustment is needed.

- Urticaria
- Pruritus
- Skin rash
- Burning sensation of the skin
- Erythema
- Swelling of skin

Contraindications to Emollients:

Allergies to any component of this formulation

Warnings and precautions

Cancer
- It is best to not use it for more than four hours after radiation.
- These agents can dissolve fuchsin, a dye used to define the radiation field's margins.
Skin grafts:
- You should not apply it to skin grafts unless the graft is successfully taken.

How to administer Emollients?

Emollients should not be applied over areas that have received radiation therapy for at least four hours.
Some products may dissolve the fuchsin dye that is used to identify the margins of the radiation field.
Consult a physician beforehand if the patient is undergoing radiation therapy that involves the use of fuchsin dye. In case the skin is broken, it should be covered with a dressing.
