Fusidic Acid (Fucidin) is available as topical creams and ointments and is used to treat patients with superficial skin infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Skin infections:
- It is used to treat primary and secondary skin infections brought on by germs that are typically sensitive to fusidic acid, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and Corynebacterium minutissimum, including impetigo contagiosa, erythrasma, infected wounds, and infected burns.
Fusidic acid (Fucidin) Dose in Adults
Fusidic acid (Fucidin) Dose in the therapy of skin infections:
- Topical:
- Apply a small amount of the drug to the affected area twice or thrice a day for 1 to 2 weeks.
Dose in Children:
Refer to adults' dosing.
Use in Pregnancy: Category C
- Fusidic acid can be applied topically to cause minimal absorption.
- When taken systemically it crosses the placenta. However, there have been no side effects in animal testing.
Use during breastfeeding:
- The drug is only absorbed minimally when applied topically. It is not known if the drug is secreted into breast milk.
- Topical application was tested for cracked, painful nipples in nursing women secondary to impetigo. However, it was not effective for systemic infections resulting in mastitis.
Dose in Kidney disease:
No dosage adjustment is recommended.
Dose in Liver disease:
No adjustment in the dose is recommended.

Central nervous system:
- Can result in pain when used for treating deep leg ulcers.

- This can lead to local skin allergy and contact dermatitis.

Superinfection
- If used for a prolonged period, can cause superinfection. Superadded infections can be fatal.

How to administer Fusidic acid (Fucidin)?
- To be used only as a topical agent.
- Avoid contact with eyes.
- Can be used after incision and drainage.
- Can be used over the crust of impetigo contagiosa.
Mechanism of action of Fusidic acid (Fucidin):
- It inhibits the synthesis proteins in sensitive organisms.
- It prevents aminoacyl-tRNA from being converted into proteins.
