Indigo Carmine Dye - Uses, Dose, Side effects, MOA

Indigo Carmine is an organic sodium salt, a synthetic color, that is used to localize ureteral orifices during cystoscopy and ureteral catheterization.

Indigo Carmine Uses:

  • Localization of ureteral orifices:

    • It is used during cystoscopy and ureteral catheterization to localize ureteral orifices.

Indigo Carmine dose in adults:

Indigo Carmine Dose for the Localization of ureteral orifices:

  • IM, IV (preferred):
  • The usual dose is 5 mL;
  • To avoid skin discoloration in underweight adults, doses of 5 mL or less are preferred.

How to administer Indigo carmine?

  • The drug may be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. IV injections may be administered undiluted and are preferred.
  • The solution should be inspected before administration for discoloration or precipitation of the solution.
  • The contents of the solution should be withdrawn using 5-micron filters only.

  • IV injection: 4-5 minutes;
  • IM injection: Delayed (comparable to IV administration).

Excretion:

  • Urine usually appears in 10 minutes after IV administration. It retains its blue color.
