Sclerodex (Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10%) - Uses, Dose

Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10% are both types of intravenous (IV) solutions commonly used in medical settings. These solutions are often prescribed by healthcare professionals for various clinical purposes. Here's a brief explanation of each solution:

Dextrose 25%:

- Dextrose 25% is a concentrated solution that contains 25 grams of glucose in 100 milliliters of solution.

- It is also used in emergency situations to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and as a vehicle for administering other medications.

Sodium Chloride 10%:
- Sodium chloride is commonly referred to as salt and is an essential electrolyte in the body.
- Sodium chloride 10% is a hypertonic saline solution that contains 10 grams of sodium chloride (salt) in 100 milliliters of solution.
- It is primarily used for specific medical conditions where a hypertonic saline solution is required. These situations may include the treatment of certain types of severe dehydration, hyponatremia (low blood sodium levels), and other medical conditions.

Sclerodex contains 25% dextrose and 10% sodium chloride. It is used as a sclerosing agent for the treatment of varicose veins of the smaller veins and their communicating branches.

Sclerosing agent:
- It is a mild sclerosing agent and is used as a local treatment of varicose veins as an adjunct to surgery.

Sclerodex Dose as a Sclerosing agent:

Use it through an intravenous (IV) injection.
The amount you use (dose) should be between 0.1 and 1 milliliter (mL).
The specific amount depends on how long and big the vein you are treating is.
Don't use more than a total of 10 mL in one visit or treatment session.

Sclerosing agents are typically used to close or treat veins for medical purposes, like varicose vein treatment.

Preganancy Risk Category: C

Its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not known.
It is best to delay elective procedures, such as the treatment for varicose veins, until after the birth.
The gravid uterus can cause varicosity in the veins of lower limbs to worsen during pregnancy.

Side effects of Sclerodex:

Contraindication to Sclerodex (Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10%):

Recent superficial or deep thrombophlebitis (6 months to 2 years):
- If you've had blood clots in your veins (superficial or deep) in the past 6 months to 2 years, you should be careful or avoid certain treatments.
Varicose veins caused by abdominal or pelvic tumors:
- If your varicose veins are a result of tumors in your abdomen or pelvis, it's important to consider this when planning treatment.
Potential underlying arterial disease:
- If there's a possibility that you have problems with your arteries, this needs to be taken into account.
Renal or cardiac insufficiencies accompanied by venous stasis or dilatation:
- If you have kidney or heart problems along with issues like slowed blood flow or vein widening, special care is needed.
Angina pectoris:

Hypersensitivity

Thromboembolism

Don't use this treatment in people who had superficial or deep blood clots in the past 6 months to 2 years, as it's not recommended in these cases.

How to administer Sclerodex (Dextrose 25% and sodium chloride 10%)?

This medicine should only be given through an intravenous (IV) route.
It's important to prevent it from leaking outside of the vein or being injected into an artery, as this can harm the nearby tissues and cause tissue death (ischemia and necrosis).
When injecting in different spots, make sure to leave about 2 inches (around 5 centimeters) of space between the injection sites to avoid complications.

Mechanism of action of Sclerodex:

It is a chemical irritation that causes endothelial injury by direct caustic destruction.
Fibrosis of the vessel endothelium results from the inflammatory process.
It is a weak agent that can be used to treat varicose veins in the smaller blood vessels.
