Derman (Undecylenic acid and derivatives)

Derman is the brand name of the drug that contains Undecylenic acid and derivatives. It has antifungal and astringent properties. it is utilised for the therapy of:

  • Jock itch (tinea cruris)

  • Ringworm (tinea corporis)

  • Athlete's foot (tinea pedis)

Derman Dose in Adults

Derman Dose in the treatment of Tinea pedis and tinea corporis:

    • Two times each day for four weeks, use as a topical solution.

Derman Dose in the treatment of Tinea cruris (spray only):

    • Two times each day for two weeks, use as a topical solution.

Derman Dose in Children

Derman Dose in children for the treatment of Athlete's foot (tinea pedis):

  • Children older than 2 years of age:

    • Apply as a topical solution two times a day for four weeks.

Derman Dose in children for the treatment of Ringworm (tinea corporis) infection:

  • Children older than 2 years of age:

    • Apply as a topical solution two times a day for four weeks.

Use in Pregnancy and lactation:

Topical applications of the drug other than over the breast or nipple may be safely used in pregnant and lactating mothers.

Dose in Kidney disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustment in the dose in patients with kidney disease

Dose in liver disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustment in the dose in patients with liver disease.

Side effects of Derman:

Topical application may result in hypersensitivity reactions causing redness and itching.

Contraindication to Derman (Undecylenic acid and derivatives) includes:

Children under two years old should not use OTC medicines to treat diaper rash.

Warnings and precautions

  • Self-medication (OTC):
    • OTC medicines should not be applied to the scalp. Avoid contact with the eyes.
    • A healthcare provider should be consulted if irritation persists or the condition doesn't improve within four weeks.

Monitoring Parameters:

  • No monitoring parameters are required.
  • The response to treatment should be assessed after a few days.
  • In non-responders, other potent antifungal agents for topical or oral use may be tried.

How to apply Derman (Undecylenic acid and derivatives)?

  • It is available for topical application only.
  • Apply a small coating to the skin that is dry and clean. When applied to the scalp or nails, it is ineffective.

Topical application for Tinea pedis:

  • It should be applied between the toes.
  • Encourage the patient to wear comfortable, well-ventilated footwear.
  • The patient should be advised to change the shoes and socks at least once a day.

Mechanism of action of Derman (Undecylenic acid and derivatives):

It is a fungistatic fatty acid that may include zinc. It reduces irritation and roughness by having an astringent effect.
