Miconazole Nitrate (Daktarin Topical Gel, Cream, Ointment) - Uses, Dose

Miconazole Nitrate (Daktarin) is available as a cream, ointment, and Gel (intravaginal Gel). It is used to treat superficial skin and mucosal/ vaginal fungal infections.

Miconazole Nitrate (Daktarin) Uses:

  • For treating vulvovaginal candidiasis and many skins and mucous membrane fungal infections

Miconazole Nitrate Dose in Adults:

Dosage of miconazole nitrate for Tinea corporis:

  • Topical: Apply twice daily for 1 month

Miconazole Nitrate Dose in the treatment of Tinea cruris:

  • Topical: Apply two times a day for 14 days

Miconazole Nitrate Dose in the treatment of Tinea pedis:

  • Topical: Apply twice daily for 1 month
    • Effervescent tablet: Dissolve 1 tablet in ~1 gallon of water; soak feet for half an hour

Miconazole Dose in the treatment of Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Intravaginal:

 

  • Suppository, 1,200 mg:
    • Insert 1 suppository ( single dose)
  • Suppository, 100 mg:
    • Insert 1 suppository at bedtime for 1 week
  • Suppository, 200 mg:
    • Insert 1 suppository at bedtime for 3 days
  • Cream, 4%:
    • Insert 1 applicatorful at bedtime for 3 days
  • Cream, 2%:
    • Insert 1 applicatorful at bedtime for 1 week

Miconazole Nitrate dose in Children:

Treatment of superficial dermatologic infection with miconazole nitrate dosage:

  • Ointment: Children over 2 years old and adolescents

    • Topical: Do this twice daily in the afflicted region.

Miconazole Pregnancy Category: C

  • Vaginal administration can cause a small amount of systemic absorption.
  • Topical azole products for vulvovaginal candidiasis in the uterus (7-day treatments only) are recommended.
  • Vaginal products can alter the effectiveness of latex condoms or diaphragms.

Miconazole use during breastfeeding:

  • Unknown. It is possible to use topical applications that result in minimal systemic absorption.

Dose in Kidney Disease:

How to apply Topical Miconazole (Daktarin)?

It is applied once daily over the affected area. Vaginal cream may be applied once a day at bedtime inside or around the vagina for a minimum of three consecutive days.


Mechanism of action of Miconazole Nitrate (Daktarin):

It decreases the production of ergosterol, which causes fungal cell wall permeability to be altered. This leads to increased protein and nutrient loss.
