Tioconazole (Trosyd Cream) - Uses, Dose, MOA, Brands

Tioconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat yeast infections, particularly vaginal yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis). It belongs to the azole class of antifungal drugs, which work by inhibiting the growth of fungi. Tioconazole is typically available as a vaginal cream or ointment and is applied inside the vagina for the treatment of yeast infections.

Tioconazole (Trosyd Cream) is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug that is applied inside the vagina to treat local fungal infections. It is used to treat vaginal candidiasis.

Tioconazole (Trosyd) Dose in Adult

Tioconazole (Trosyd) Dose in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis:

  • Tioconazole is applied directly inside using a special applicator.
  • You use it once before bed, putting the whole dose inside the vagina.
  • This single dose is usually effective in treating the infection.

Tioconazole Use in Adolescents:

Refer to adults’ dose.

Pregnancy Risk Category: C

  • When you put tioconazole in your vagina, a little bit can get into your body.
  • It's not advised to use just one dose of tioconazole to treat a yeast infection down there; instead, doctors suggest using products with tioconazole that you apply every day for a week, especially if you're pregnant.
  • Also, keep in mind that using tioconazole might make latex condoms and diaphragms less effective at preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.

Tioconazole Dose in Kidney Disease:

  • The instructions from the manufacturer don't mention changing the dosage for people with kidney problems.
  • That's because tioconazole is mostly used in the vagina, so it's not absorbed a lot into the bloodstream, which means it's less likely to cause issues for people with kidney troubles.

Tioconazole Dose in Liver disease:

  • The manufacturer's instructions don't mention changing the dosage for people with liver problems.
  • Since tioconazole is mainly used locally in the vagina and doesn't get absorbed much into the bloodstream, it's less likely to affect the liver or require dosage adjustments for people with liver issues.

  • It's really good at fighting off different kinds of fungi, like the ones that cause skin infections and yeast infections.
  • It works against a bunch of different types of fungi, including Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, T. erinacei, T. tonsurans, Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, and Candida albicans.
  • It's also effective against Epidermophyton floccosum, which is another fungus that can cause skin problems.

Onset of Action:

  • Some Improvement: You might start feeling better within the first 24 hours of using tioconazole.
  • Complete Relief: It usually takes about 7 days of using tioconazole for the symptoms to go away completely.

Absorption:

  • Intravaginal: After applying tioconazole inside the vagina, a small amount gets into the bloodstream. The levels in the bloodstream peak between 10.6 to 35.8 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) about 8 hours after using it, but by 24 hours, there's hardly any left in the bloodstream.

Distribution:

  • Vaginal Fluid: Tioconazole stays in the vaginal fluid for about 24 to 72 hours after you apply it, which helps it keep fighting off the infection in the vagina.
