Trolamine Salicylate - Uses, Dose, MOA, Brands, Side effects

Trolamine salicylate is a topical anti-inflammatory medicine that is used in the symptomatic treatment of pain in patients with arthralgias and arthritis, muscular sprains, and neuralgias.

Trolamine Uses:

  • It is prescribed for the symptomatic relief of pain experienced by rheumatoid arthritis, muscle pain, sprains, neuralgia, and arthritic patients.

Trolamine dose in Adults

Trolamine dose in the treatment of Pain:

  • Topical: It is applied topically to the affected area three or four times a day or as needed.

Trolamine dose in children:

  • Children older than 12 years:

    • Refer to adult dosing.

Pregnancy risk category: N (not formally assigned)

  • Some systemic absorption may occur when the drug is applied topically. You should use it with caution, and avoid the last trimester.
  • It may be used cautiously in lactating mothers.

Use in kidney disease:

  • Those who have bleeding disorders, such as haemophilia and low platelet counts, or who are taking a vitamin K antagonist like warfarin or another anticoagulant medication concurrently, should use it with caution.
  • Patients with hyperthyroidism and diabetes should use it with caution.

How to administer Trolamine?

  • It is wrapped around the affected area loosely with an elastic bandage. 

Mechanism of action of Trolamine:

  • It blocks the activity of cyclooxygenase enzymes, which results in inhibition of prostaglandins as well as thromboxanes from inflammatory cells.
  •  It inhibits the release inflammatory cytokines by these cells at the source of inflammation.
