A combination used to treat ulcers and varicose veins have zinc gelatin as one of its ingredients. Gelatin, glycerin, zinc oxide, and water make up the paste. It serves as a protector for lesions such as varicosities in the lower limbs and other conditions that need an adhesive paste to cure. The dressing is wrapped for two weeks around the limb and removed thereafter by soaking it in water. It is available as Unna's boot and Gelucast.
Zinc Gelatin Dose in Adults
Zinc Gelatin use as a Protectant:
- Apply topically as an external boot.
- It is often sold as a combination of water, gelatin, glycerin, and zinc oxide.
- It should be applied over the varicosities and occlusive dressings should be wrapped.
- The dressing is removed after 2 weeks by soaking it in water.
Use in Children:
It may be used in children as a topical paste.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:
It is a topical dressing that does not absorb and can be used in pregnancy and nursing mothers.
Zinc Gelatin Dose in Kidney disease:
It does not get absorbed and may be used as topical paste in kidney disease.
Zinc Gelatin Dose in Liver disease:
Since it is used for topical purposes, it may be used in patients with liver disease.

- Irritation
Contraindications:
Allergic reactions to zinc oxide, gelatin or to any component of the formulation.
Monitor:
- Monitor the patient for allergic reactions.
- Local irritation and itching may occur.
- It is also mixed with calamine lotion to reduce the local allergic symptoms.
How to use?
- It is applied as an external adhesive bandage.
- The paste that consists of water, zinc, and gelatin is applied over the ulcers and varicosities.
- The bandage is then applied followed by re-application of the paste.
