Naftin (Naftifine) Cream, Gel - Uses, Dosage, Side effects

Naftin (Naftifine) is an antifungal medicine for the treatment of tinea infections that is available as a cream and gel for topical appplication.

Naftin (Naftifine) Uses:

  • Tinea infections:

    • Tinea cruris (also known as jock itch), tinea corporis (also known as ringworm), and tinea pedis (also known as athlete's foot) infections can all be treated with topical creams of 1%, 2%, and gel of 1%.
  • Tinea pedis:

    • Topical Gel 2% is indicated for the treatment of tinea pedis (athlete's foot).

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in Adults

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in the treatment of Tinea corporis and tinea cruris:

  • Cream 1% and gel 1%:
    • Apply the gel topically twice daily (in the morning and evening) to the skin around the afflicted region and apply the cream topically once daily for up to four weeks.
  • Cream 2%:
    • For two weeks, apply a thin coating of the cream to the afflicted region and the healthy skin all around it.

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in the treatment of Tinea pedis:

  • Cream 1% and gel 1%:
    • For up to four weeks, use the cream once daily or the gel twice daily in the morning and the evening to the afflicted region and the surrounding skin.
  • Cream 2% and gel 2%:
    • For two weeks, apply a light coating once daily to the afflicted region and the skin around it.

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in the treatment of Tinea corporis:

  • Children older than 2 years and Adolescents:
    • Topical Cream 2%:
      • Refer to adult dosing.

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in the treatment of Tinea cruris, tinea pedis:

  • Children ≥12 years and Adolescents:
    • Topical: Cream 2%:
      • Refer to adult dosing.

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in the treatment of Tinea pedis:

  • Children ≥12 years and Adolescents:
    • Topical: Gel 2%:
      • Refer to adult dosing.

Pregnancy Risk Category: B

  • In animal reproduction studies, adverse fetal outcomes weren't observed when the drug had been taken orally.
  • After topical application, 4 to 6% of the drug can be absorbed systemically.

Use of Naftifine while breastfeeding

  • It is unknown if the drug will be excreted into breast milk.
  • The manufacturer suggests weighing the benefits to the mother and the risks to her infant.

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in Kidney Disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustments in the dose in patients with kidney disease.

Naftin (Naftifine) Dose in Liver disease:

The manufacturer has not recommended any adjustments in the dose in patients with liver disease.

Warnings and precautions

  • Irritation

    • If irritation or hypersensitivity is observed, discontinue use.
    • If you notice a reaction, please immediately treat it.

Monitoring parameters:

  • Follow culture and KOH exam
  • re-assess if no improvement is noticed after four weeks of therapy

How to administer Naftin (Naftifine)?

  • It is intended for topical use only. Avoid applying over nasal, ophthalmic, oral, or vaginal mucosa.
  • Apply to clean and dry skin and do not use occlusive dressings. Wash hands before and after use.

Mechanism of action of Naftin (Naftifine):

  • It is a synthetic antifungal drug with broad-spectrum antifungal properties.
  • It dose-dependently inhibits squalene-epoxidase while preferentially avoiding other enzymes.
  • As a result, there is a decrease in the production of ergosterol, which is an important component of fungi's cell membranes. Additionally, it raises the enzyme content of fungus cells.

Half-life elimination:

  • 2 to 3 days

Systemic Absorption:

  • Gel: 4%
  • Cream: 6%

Excretion: Urine and faeces (as unchanged drug and/or metabolites)
