Toxic shock syndrome is usually due to toxin secreting staphylococci but toxjn producing streptococci has also been implicated.usually associated e nasal packing for more than 48 hrs or tempon usage foe prolonged periods . The exotoxin mainly Toxic shock sydrome toxin 1 secreted by staph aureus is absorbed systemically and causes systemic menifestations of TSS ie abrupt onset of fever macular rash and desquamation of palms and soles in people who lack protective antitoxin antibody. Possibleeduators of effect of toxins are IL 1 and TNF alpha. TSS exotoxin acts as SUPER AnTIGEN which interact e Tcells and MHC ll in a different way than normal and can activate 20 to 30 %of Tcells where as normal antigen can activate o.3 % tcells through normal interaction with T cells so as a result huge amount of cytokines released and they then cause the symptoms of TSS
Mortality is about 5%
Treatment is mainly supportive although organism needs to be eradicated
so, TSS is basically due to the activation of immune system as a result of the Toxin entering the blood stream.
